BIM World: Applying augmented reality on worksites

Our BIM experts were present at the BIM World trade show on April 5 and 6. It is the not-to-be-missed event for professionals and local authorities devoted to using BIM and digital technology for design and construction.

THIS YEAR, OUR TEAM HAD SET 3 OBJECTIVES:

Conduct market research on 3D scanning tools

This solution can be used to obtain a model of what currently exists in real time. This is very useful in restoration projects to have an overall vision as close as possible to reality.  3D scanning is also an interesting tool at the end of the construction project to check that what has been installed corresponds to the projection of the model.
Thus, BIM World was an opportunity for our teams to meet professionals who were demonstrating mobile scanning stations.

Find a digital model viewer

Today, our BIM specialists use REVIT software. However, not all of our teams are familiar with this software, which is why we are looking for a tool that would make it easier to read the models. This will give project managers and construction managers the freedom to no longer be dependent on exports from our BIM team.

Integrate BIM into the construction team

We are seeking to improve on how we use our BIM models. The objective is to streamline the flow of information. To achieve this, our experts are planning to focus on three principles

  • Encourage adoption of an electronic document management system (EDM). It works as a file storage and sharing service
  • Use augmented reality: This system can be used to superimpose components of the model onto the existing structure. It makes it easier to understand what is going to be introduced or to check that what has been implemented corresponds to the model. Finally, this tool can be used upfront to avoid installation problems.
  • Provide software for final acceptance (taking notes on site). This software compares the 3D model and the actual structure in real time, and offers the opportunity to make a note of the exact location where there is a problem on the model. The optimal solution would be to link the EDM system with this software to ensure that we always have the latest versions of the model.
